Fair Finance Guide Japan Case Study on “Green loans” in the context of lack of supply chain due diligence

28 February 2024

Fair Finance Guide Japan's new study reveals human rights and environmental problems associated with a nickel mine expansion in Indonesia, whereby its products are to be processed in a newly constructed plant in Japan operated by Sumitomo Metal Mining.

The construction fee for this new plant is financed by a so-called "Green Loan" syndicate including at least 28 domestic banks.

Fair Finance Guide Japan condemns this lack of supply chain due diligence and places responsibility on Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank for co-leading this syndicate loan organized under the miss use of the term "Green".
